Aquatech International Corporation, a leader in water purification technology, has been contracted to design, build, and operate a seawater desalination plant at Mundra in Coastal Gujarat, India for the 4-gigawatt (GW) coal-fired plant Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP), which is owned by Coastal Gujarat Power Limited (CGPL).

Desalination is the process through which salt and other minerals are removed from seawater in order to convert it to freshwater that is suitable for consumption or irrigation.

Under the terms of the contract, Aquatech will provide a pre-treatment system, including lamella clarifiers that are followed by a two-stage pressure filtration, and a Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) system consisting of four streams of SWRO banks and two banks of Brackish Water Reverse Osmosis (BWRO).

Aquatech will be supplying the project on Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC) basis, along with an operations and maintenance (O&M) contract. The company expects to produce 12 million liters per day (MLD) by November of this year, and will commission the entire SWRO plant by mid-next year.

The UMPP project in Mundra that will utilize Aquatech’s SWRO technology will have a production capacity of 25,200 cubic meters per day of desalinated water to be used in various end applications. A portion of the desalinated water will be treated through a BWRO system and ion exchange to produce high purity water for boiler makeup.

Deemed to be the most energy-efficient plant in the country, the CGPL UMPP will be India’s first private sector power project that uses supercritical boiler technology.

Coastal Gujarat Power Limited is a subsidiary of Tata Power Company Limited, the largest private sector power utility in India, with an installed generation capacity of over 2,300 megawatts (MW). Tata Power has installed and commissioned India’s first 500-MW unit at its thermal power generating station in Trombay. Its headquarters is located in Mumbai, India.

Aquatech International Corporation is a leading supplier of water and wastewater treatment systems, focusing on desalination, water reuse, and zero liquid discharge, for the industrial and infrastructure markets. The company is headquartered in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, with offices throughout North America and subsidiaries in Europe, the Middle East, India, and China.
